[e-drug] Ensuring ethical drug promotion (cont'd)

E-drug: Ensuring ethical drug promotion (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colleagues:

In the global debate on "ethical promotion" of pharmaceutical
products, I think it wise to re-examine several key issues:

(1) what do we mean by "ethical"?
(2) why do we advocate double standards, one standard for drug
production/promotion; the other for drug consumption?

In my estimation, it is unethical for products to be advertised directly
to the public without direct access by the public. DTC is an
ethically-marginal short-run strategy, no matter what ethics one
chooses to uphold.
