E-drug: Ensuring ethical drug promotion (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

I totally agree with Mr Sesay about his concerns with regard to the
professional control of advertisement of medicines. In recent times in
the United Kingdom medicines like Nurofen tablets (Ibuprofen) are
being offered on a promotional basis with captions in some
pharmacies reading "buy 2 packs and get one free". Much as
appropriate advice is given to consumers when they purchase these
medications, the message the caption carries does not give the
impression that potential adverse drug reactions, especially in the
elderly, can occur and in fact do occur when these medicines are
used inappropriately. Consumers of healthcare products should be
taught and advised to purchase what is absolutely necessary and not
be encouraged to buy products purely on an economic basis.
