E-DRUG: Methodology Report 2012 for the Access to Medicine Index published
------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues,
Yesterday, the Access to Medicine Foundation published the Methodology
Report of the Access to Medicine Index 2012. The ATM Index ranks twenty of
the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies on what they do to make
medicine more affordable for and available to people in developing
countries. The next edition is scheduled for October 2012 and is based on
MSCI ESG Research’s analysis and ratings. The Methodology underpinning the
2012 ATM Index defines exactly what is measured, how it is measured, and
why. It is the result of extensive consultation with many stakeholders in
global health, including governments, NGOs, the WHO, investors, academia
and the pharmaceutical companies themselves.
The changes compared to the 2010 methodology are evolutionary rather than
revolutionary. Because of the major health burden on women, the disease
scope of the Index 2012 has been expanded to include maternal health and
neonatal infections. To enable comparability, the same analytical framework
is used. To underscore the relative importance of results, the
overall weight of the Performance strategic pillar has been increased from
30% to 40%. The weighting of the Pricing, Manufacturing & Distribution
Technical Area has been increased from 20% to 25% to emphasize its
breadth and relative importance. The geographical scope is based on the
World Bank classification, which is updated every year. The Index now
covers 103 countries. See http://www.accesstomedicineindex.org/node/789 for
the Report, including the Framework of Analysis graph.
A new feature this year is the investigation of specific case studies of
initiatives that could serve as sustainable examples of change. The Index
team will evaluate selected case studies to provide more in-depth insight
into key access issues and how companies address these, setting inspiring
examples for the industry as a whole.
