EDRUG: News from USP
--------------------
Dear E-druggers,
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Regional Office
of the World Health Organization for the Americas has recently
established official relations with United States Pharmacopeia
(USP) by granting USP nongovernmental organization (NGO) observer
status. Among the programs and activities that have been promoted
for PAHO and USP consideration are:
- cosponsorship of conferences and workshops on such topics as
pharmaceutical quality and pharmacopeial standards, and
appropriate use of pharmaceuticals by health professionals and
consumers,
- development of strategies to improve the quality of medicines
and biologics throughout the Americas and to provide information
for health care professionals and patients,
- working with official agencies and national and multinational
organizations to establish pharmacopeial standards that are
identical or can be harmonized throughout the Americas to ensure
consistent and high quality medicines.
- participation in training programs for national or regional
quality testing laboratories in the Americas,
- USP sponsorship of visiting scientists and scholars from the
Americas.
USP's first official action as a PAHO NGO will be to participate
in the September, 1997 meeting of the Regional Committee of the
WHO for the Americas.
