E-DRUG: use of new antibiotics in Indian setting?
-------------------------------------------------

dear E-druggers,

In India every antibiotic has been subject to misuse and abuse. While
dealing with very sick patients who genuinely need to be put on antibiotics,
the choice is often difficult. Any new drug would obviously be subject to
the same misuse. Nevertheless, each new enterant is a welcome addition in a
situation of dwindling choices. It would be important for a clinician like
me to understand the specific areas of clinical relevance where these new
choices could be most relevant.

1. May I please request list members for their views on the clincial role of
sulbactam in combination with cephalosporins like ceftriaxone? Would any
body
have any recent review material on it?

2. May I please request list members for their views on the clincial role of
aztreonam? Can I please request for a recent review on it ?

[How to tackle the question what role new antibiotics can/should play in a
resource-poor health care setting? The 'standard' answer would be to make a
local antibiotics policy. Can some e-druggers help our colleague in India
about these particular examples? WB]
