E-DRUG: USP special session on the quality of medicines
-----------------------------------------------------
[It will be unlikely that colleagues outside the US will be able to attend this meeting. Would it be possible to make copies of the presentations available to e-druggers? BS]
Dear Colleagues:
The quality of medicines is an enourmous public health problem worldwide. I would like to call your attention to a special session concerning this topic at the upcoming 2005 Global Health Council Meeting in Washington DC, May 31st, 2005 from 5-7 PM. This session, organized by the U.S. Pharmacopeia Drug Quality and Information Program (USP DQI), is entitled:
A Global Goal Toward Safe Medicines: Flexible and Effective Drug Quality Assurance Systems
Abstract: An essential element of having safe and effective medicines for the treatment of disease is having an effective drug quality assurance system. But all too often, developing countries - whose rates of recurrent disease and availability of counterfeit medicines are generally the highest worldwide - lack the very drug quality structure they greatly need. This special session will discuss the critical components of a good drug quality assurance system, including manufacturing and quality testing.
These issues will be discussed by three experienced voices, representing business, academia, and non-government organizations:
"Selection of Global Drug Standards to Ensure Pharmaceutical Quality and Commerce of Multi-Source Pharmaceutical Products"
Dr. Saloman Stavchansky
Alcon Centennial Professor of Pharmaceutics
College of Pharmacy
University of Texas, Austin, USA
"USP's Impact on the Quality of Pharmaceuticals"
Dr. Eric Sheinin
Chief Science Officer
U.S. Pharmacopeia
Rockville, Maryland, USA
"Assuring the Quality of Pharmaceuticals in Developing Countries"
Dr. David Lee

We hope to see many of you there.
