MANAGING DRUG SUPPLY FOR PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
DATES: 30 OCTOBER - 10 November, 2000
LOCATION: UTRECHT, THE NETHERLANDS

COURSE DIRECTORS. Lecturers are recruited from Management Sciences for
Health, International Dispensary Association, and invited guest lecturers
that have extensive experience in essential drugs program management.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE. Physicians, pharmacists, senior health system
managers, and technical assistance professionals from Ministries of Health,
non-governmental organizations, and donor agencies.

COURSE OVERVIEW. The two week course will be conducted in English and
consists of presentations, discussions, group activities, and field visits.
The course is highly participatory. The interchange of skills and
experiences among participants is essential for course activities and
learning. Sessions focus on:

  National Drug Policy and Regulation
  Drug Selection and Formulary Management
  Forecasting Drug Needs
  Procurement Methods and Strategies
  Supplier Selection and Evaluation
  Quality Assurance
  Inventory Control
  Distribution Strategies
  Financing Drug Supply
  Medical Store Management
  Rational Drug Use
  Drug Supply Information Systems
  Indicator-Based Assessments

OBJECTIVES: The course aims to expose participants to modern management
principles of drug supply systems and how to apply them to their own
specific situation. The course also provides practical problem solving
tools to decision-makers and managers in essential drugs programs to
improve their level of performance.

Participants will benefit from a highly participatory approach to learning.
Field trips include a visit to a modern medical store and a kit packing
unit. The course offers a unique opportunity to exchange views and
experiences in drug supply management in an international forum. Within
this context, participants will identify a drug management problem relevant
to their work and develop a project to address it.

FEES AND DEADLINES: Tuition, course materials, accommodations, breakfast,
lunch and dinner during the week, and breakfast only during the weekend:
$4,100. Airfare, incidentals, and health insurance are the responsibility
of the participant or sponsoring organization. Deadline for confirmation of
funding is September 15, 2000. Between September 15 and October 16, 2000,
50% of the course fee will have to be paid; after October 16, 2000 the full
fee will have to be paid.
