Post of the Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy Department (EDM) Drug
Action Programme (DAP)

Objectives of the programme: The objective of the WHO Essential Drugs and
Medicines Policy Department (EDM) is to contribute to saving lives and
improving health by developing global guidance and by collaborating with
countries to provide:
(1) equity of access to essential drugs,
(2) rational use of drugs, and
(3) drug quality, safety and efficacy.

In the Regional Office, the Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines
Policy (Essential Drugs Programme) develops and coordinates support to
Member States in order to improve national capacity in drug supply and
access, drug regulation and quality assurance, and rational drug use.

The successful candidate will: Identify priority pharmaceutical problems
and
needs in countries of the African Region; plan, coordinate and monitor the
implementation of technical support at country level and for regional
essential
drugs programmes; ensure that an integrated AFRO/DAP technical support is
provided; disseminate relevant information on drug issues to all
stakeholders.
Ensure efficient collaboration and coordination on essential drugs
activities
between AFRO and EDM, within AFRO, with bi- and multi-lateral agencies and
Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) at country and regional levels;
advocate technical cooperation among countries in the field of essential
drugs and national drug policy issues. Contribute to the development of
operational tools and training materials, in cooperation with AFRO, EDM,
WHO collaborating centres, academia, professional societies, and health
research institutes.

Qualifications Required:

Education and Skills: University degree in pharmacy or medicine.
Postgraduate degree in public health would be an asset.
Extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and experience with drug policy
issues in developing countries, especially in Africa, with knowledge of
aspects of essential drug issues in public and private sectors. Proven
ability to write clear, concise reports and technical documents. The
candidate should be computer literate.

Experience: Minimum five years national and five years international
experience in the pharmaceutical sector, mostly in a developing country,
with experience in national drug policy development, drugs management, drug
regulation and rational drug use, and experience in working with NGOs.

Languages: Excellent knowledge of English and French is essential.
Knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset.

Annual salary (net of tax): US$ 50 767 at single rate and US$ 54 516 with
primary dependants. Post Adjustment: 15.% of the above figures. This
percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur
each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate
fluctuations or inflation.
