Objectives of the programme:
(a) The objective of the Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines
Policy is to help save lives and improve health by closing the gap
between the potential which essential drugs have to offer and the
reality that for millions of people, particularly the poor and
disadvantaged, medicines are unavailable, unaffordable, unsafe or
improperly used; (b) Roll Back Malaria (RBM) aims to halve the global
burden of malaria by 2010 through improved access to diagnosis and
treatment, increased use of Insecticide Treated Materials (ITMs),
increased intermittent treatment for pregnant women and rapid
detection on response to malaria epidemics.
The successful candidate will:
(a) Provide technical guidance and support to global, regional and
country initiatives for ensuring equitable access to good quality
antimalarials; (b) Provide technical guidance for incorporating access
to essential drugs in the design, monitoring, implementation and
evaluation of programmes for RBM, Integrated Management of
Childhood Illnesses (IMCI), Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) and other
problem-specific programmes at global, regional and country level; (c)
Focus the outcome of initiatives to improve access to antimalarials and
other disease-specific essential drugs, on a selected number of
countries and monitor impact; (d) Provide technical guidance to
countries for better integration of pharmaceutical sector into health
sector reform; (e) Carry out other programme activities as will be
assigned by the Director, Coordinator of Policy, Access and Rational
Use (PAR) and Coordinator of the Drug Action Programme (DAP).
Qualifications Required:
Education and Skills:
Degree in pharmacy. Postgraduate degree in pharmaceuticals and/or
public health planning and management. Experience and knowledge of
WHO and Essential Drugs activities (i.e. quality assurance, drug
management and supplies, rational drug use, etc). Experience and
knowledge of control prevention and treatment of malaria as well as
current global malaria control strategies and concepts.
Experience:
At least seven years experience, five of which should be with the UN
system, international and national health NGOs or health professional
organizations. Proven ability to write clear scientific, training and
advocacy documents. Ability to work in a multicultural setting.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of English with a working knowledge of French.
Annual salary (net of tax):
US$ 52 503 at single rate and US$ 56 380 with primary dependants.
Post Adjustment: 20.7% of the above figures. This percentage is to be
considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either
upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or
inflation.
